If a parent wanted the very worst for his child, wished to ruin him for life, he could do no better than the following recipe: Give him every thing he wants, everything his heart desires. Spoil him rotten. From an early age give him lots of expensive toys and money for all the sweets and junk food he wants. Encourage him in the habit of eating out at fast food places with his friends by giving him money for it whenever he asks. Whenever he wants money for anything, give it to him. Give him a car when he becomes a teen-ager and pay for the insurance, gasoline, etc. Give him all the freedom and liberty he wants. When he does wrong or gets in trouble jump to his defense and fight for him. This formula really works. You can depend on it. Why does it work? Well, one main reason it works is because it fosters in the child an outlook or mentality of self-indulgence, self-gratification. And a mentality of self- indulgence, self-gratification leads to ruin. The way of self- indulgence is the exact opposite of the way of success and happiness. It is the way of the loser. It is the way of laziness, prodigality and lack of character. The way of the winner is the way of self-restraint, self-denial, self- discipline, self-reliance, determination, hard work, perseverance, integrity, moral principle and temperance. The winner knows how to struggle, how to handle adversity and hardship. He has developed habits, knowledge and outlook that lie at the very heart of finding happiness and success in life. He has built up the kind of character required to win, not only in a material sense, but also in the spiritual sense. It is indeed a fundamental principle of life that too much ease and comfort is bad for character and a certain amount of difficulty and hardship in life is important to the building of character. Just as exertion against resistance is basic in the building up of muscle, physical strength, and endurance in the art of bodybuilding in the same way exertion against resistance (resistance in the form of obstacle, hardship and difficulty) is basic in the building up of moral character.
