Self-control, self-government, self-restraint, self-discipline. They are basic to so much in life. They are the foundation, the prerequisite, for so much that is so important in life. They are basic to a life of prudence and wisdom. They are basic to right living; to Godly, virtuous living; to the practice of Christianity. They are critical in curbing bodily appetite and natural inclination, coming into play in so many facets of life. Let us list some of the different facets where they come into play: - moderation and restraint in regard to the consumption of food or drink - restraint and self-control in the spending of money - restraint in the use of the tongue - restraint in regard to our emotions (e.g. command over anger, hatred, jealousy, etc.) - regulation of our behavior towards others (in the form of politeness, honesty, truthfulness, justness, etc.) - sexual restraint Few things in life are as important as self-control, self- restraint.
