On the Koran and Islamic Belief and Outlook
To understand any people we do well to first look to their
religion. It is in their religion that we find the clues to
their mentality and outlook. Our religion shapes and forms us
and defines a great deal about us.
What is Islam all about? What does the word Islam bring to
mind? We know about its beautiful architecture, that it was
started by Mohammed, and that its holy book is the Koran. What
else do we know about it? What is the religion all about?
What are its teachings? What values, outlooks and attitudes
characterize it? Since the terrorist attack of 9-11 our
leaders, in line with our national ideal of tolerance of other
religions, have repeatedly called it a peaceful religion. Is
it, in fact? President Bush, in a speech, referred to the
Koran as the Holy Koran, as if to say he accepted its spiritual
authority and placed it on a level with the Bible. How does it
compare in its outlook with that of the Bible? Our leaders
have tried very hard to present a friendly attitude toward
Islam, to show a tolerance and acceptance of it. But do they
really know what Islam really is? What is the Koran all about?
What attitudes, values and spirit characterize it? How does it
compare in its outlooks, values and spirit with our New
Testament?
The answer is that the Koran is mostly one long, harsh,
belligerent diatribe against infidels. According to the Koran
that person who does not accept God's supposed revelations to
Mohammed (i.e. the "unbeliever") will be damned by God to
endless suffering in a fiery hell. It is a constantly
recurring theme appearing on nearly every page. And God does
not only punish the "unbeliever" but he takes great delight in
watching him writhe in anguish. The God of the Koran is a God
of vengeance and spite. The Koran is a book filled with venom
--- venom against all non-Muslims but especially against Jews
and Christians.
The words of the Koran are supposedly the words of God himself
spoken through the Angel Gabriel. The Koran is repetitious in
the extreme, very boring, and very deficient in anything
profound. It is not what one would expect of a religious book.
God's malice toward the unbeliever, i.e. the non-Muslim,
pervades from cover to cover. The attitude projected is that
the infidels (meaning Christians, Jews, all non-Muslims) are
detested by God; that they are evil; that they are excrement,
scum, the filth of the earth. According to the Koran all non-
Muslims are rejected of God, damned by God, evil, worthless,
fit only to be destroyed. The Koran abounds in explicit
references to Christians and Jews. All are condemnatory. The
spirit that the Koran projects is one of belligerence, anger
and hatred towards the non-Muslim. The Koran repeatedly
commands the Muslim to make no friends with the non-Muslim. Do
we find an emphasis on such things as kindness, love your
neighbor, peaceableness, forgiveness, judge not, etc. in its
pages (such as what we find in the teachings of Christ and
Christianity)? No. Not at all. Nowhere. The Muslim attitude
is "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth." The Koranic
concept of right action is to mercilessly and cruelly slaughter
the infidel --- to eliminate them. That is right and meritful
action in the eyes of the Koran. As one reads the Koran one
cannot help but notice all the harshness, meanness and cruelty
that is found on almost every page. It is a book of harshness,
meanness and cruelty.
Islam is a very ritualistic, form-oriented religion of certain
duties: ritualistic prayers that must be said five times a day
at specified times in very carefully specified ways,
almsgiving, fasting, pilgrimage to Mecca, engaging in holy war
against the infidel (killing infidels). Women are required to
wear burgas, kept subserviant to men, kept segregated and under
the watchful eye of religious police. Whereas Jesus emphasized
the importance of the heart, a right spirit, right conduct, and
good treatment of others Islam emphasizes ritual and form.
Whereas Jesus taught the importance of personal repentance and
renunciation of sin the Islamic way is that of enforcing moral
rules through intimidation, threat and force.
Islamic outlook is to Christianity as night is to day. They
are polar opposites. The Koran is a totally different kind of
book from the Christian New Testament. In spirit, tone,
outlook and value it is the antithesis of the New Testament.
One finds none of the New Testament spirit in it. It lacks the
emphasis on the importance of treating other people fairly and
well. In fact, its teachings are very harsh, unfair and
abusive in regard to the treatment of others, especially the
treatment of women and non-Muslims. Its teachings are
dramatically different from those taught by Jesus, with his
emphasis on love of neighbor, peaceableness, forgiveness,
humiility, self-denial and service to others. And because its
teachings are so different from Christianity it engenders a
totally different kind of religion. When we read the Koran we
can clearly see where Bin Laden and all the Muslim
fundamentalists with their terrible hatred of Jews and
Christians are coming from. And one can understand why there
was so much dancing in the streets in the Muslim world over the
incident of 9-11. The Koran, their holy book, is the source,
the wellspring, of all this hatred. In their youth they are
steeped in it and memorize it from cover to cover. And this
hatred for the West in which they are steeped by their religion
and culture is no doubt enhanced considerably by their jealousy
and envy of the power, wealth, intellectual achievements, and
general success of those they have been taught to hate so
deeply. You must read the Koran to understand Muslim attitudes
such as "whatever you do to non-Muslims is OK - steal from
them, cheat them, lie to them, hurt them - it is all just and
approved by God because they are evil, detestable, the filth of
the earth." To the Muslim the Western World is satanic and its
power, wealth and achievements are blessings given by Satan.
Given the strong hostility of the Koran towards Christian and
Jew it is difficult to believe that any religious, Koran-
believing, Koran-loving Muslim could be anything but an enemy
of America and the Western World. Add to this the moral
degeneracy and godlessness of the Western World and you have a
very potent mixture. This degeneracy only validates in the
Muslim mind the outlooks and attitudes of the Koran in regard
to Christians and Jews and confirms their satanic nature. Now
add another ingredient to the brew: the stance of at least some
Muslim clerics that mass murder of infidels is morally
justified, and indeed is a righteous act of great merit, and
that a person who sacrifices his own life in the act of killing
infidels will be rewarded by God with the highest heaven -- a
heaven consisting of gardens populated with lush, beautiful,
delicious virgins just waiting there just for their delight and
pleasure and all the sexual connotations suggested by that.
With a soup of this mixture it is easy to understand all the
violent, shocking acts of terrorism and mass murder in regions
everywhere in this world where the Muslim world interfaces with
the non-Muslim world --- where you see Muslims rubbing shoulder
to shoulder with Jews, Christians, Hindus or some other
religion. And you wonder about the prudence of the West in
welcoming into their midst people of this particular outlook.
You also wonder how societies holding the ideal of freedom of
religion can accommodate people with such outlooks.
In reading the Koran one has to ponder how a book so devoid of
depth and profundity could have given rise to a world religion.
The answer is, I suppose, "by the sword". Today in many, if
not all, Islamic countries it is a grave crime punishable by
death for a Muslim to convert to another religion. And it is
also a grave crime, punishable by death, to proselytize or
attempt to convert any Muslim to another faith. Muslim
countries do not believe in allowing any competition in the
realm of religion. They allow no religious voices but their
own. They don't believe in giving their populations any choice
in matters of religion.
SELECTED SCRIPTURE FROM THE KORAN:
The following scripture is presented as being more or less
representative of the beliefs, outlook, attitudes and values of
the Koran. As you read the passages bear in mind that by the
word "unbeliever" is meant the Jew, Christian and anyone who is
not Muslim, anyone who does not accept the teachings and
"revelation" of Mohammed. The words of the Koran are
supposedly the words of God. God is the speaker. It is the
message of God to mankind. For more information on Mohammed,
the Koran, and Islam I recommend the following books:

3:19 The only true faith in Allah's sight is Islam. He that
denies Allah's revelations should know that he is swift in
reckoning. To those who have received the Scriptures and to the
Gentiles say: "Will you surrender yourselves to Allah?" If
they become Muslims they shall be rightly guided; if they give
no heed, then your only duty is to warn them. {28} Let
believers not make friends with infidels in preference to the
faithful - he that does this has nothing to hope for from Allah
- except self-defense. {32} Say: "If you love Allah follow me.
Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. Allah is
forgiving and merciful." Say: "Obey Allah and the Apostle." If
they give no heed, then, truly, Allah does not love the
unbelievers. {53} When Jesus observed that they had no faith,
he said: "Who will help me in the cause of Allah?" The
disciples replied: "We are helpers of Allah. We believe in Him.
Bear witness that we have surrendered ourselves to him. Lord,
we believe in Your revelations and follow your apostle. Count
us among Your witnesses." They plotted, and Allah plotted.
Allah is the supreme Plotter. He said: "Jesus, I am about to
cause you to die and lift you up to Me. I shall take you away
from the unbelievers and exalt your followers above them till
the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me shall you all return and I
shall judge your disputes. The unbelievers shall be sternly
punished in this world and in the world to come: there shall be
none to help them. As for those that have faith and do good
works, they shall be given their reward in full. Allah does not
love the evil-doer." This revelation, and this wise
admonition, We recite to you. Jesus is like Adam in the sight
of Allah. He created him of dust and then said to him: "Be",
and he was. This is the truth from your Lord: therefore do not
doubt it. To those who dispute with you concerning Jesus after
the knowledge you have received, say: "Come, let us gather our
sons and your sons, our wives and your wives, our people and
your people. We will pray together and call down the curse of
Allah on every liar." This is the whole truth. There is no god
but Allah. It is Allah who is the Mighty, the Wise One! If they
give no heed to you, Allah knows the evil-doers. {85} He that
chooses a religion other than Islam, it shall not be accepted
from him and in the world to come he shall be one of the lost.
How will Allah guide those who lapse into unbelief after
embracing the faith and acknowledging the apostle as true, and
after receiving veritable proofs? Allah does not guide the
evil-doers. Their reward shall be the curse of Allah, the
angels, and all men; under it they shall abide forever. {118}
Believers, do not make friends with any men other than your own
people. They will spare no pains to corrupt you. They desire
nothing but your ruin. Their hatred is clear from what they
say, but more violent is the hatred which their breasts
conceal.
22:58 Those that have embraced the true faith and done good
works shall enter the gardens of delight, but the unbelievers
who have denied Our revelations shall receive an ignominious
punishment. {60} He that repays an injury in kind and then is
wronged again shall be helped by Allah. {77} Fight for the
cause of Allah with the devotion due to Him.
68:44 Therefore leave to Me those that deny this revelation. We
will lead them step by step to their ruin, in ways beyond their
knowledge. I shall bear long with them: My stratagem is sure.
77:35 Woe on that day to the disbelievers! Such is the Day of
Judgement. We will assemble you all, together with past
generations. If then you are cunning, try your spite against
Me!
78:14 Fixed is the Day of Judgement. On that day the Trumpet
shall be sounded and you shall come in multitudes. The gates
of heaven shall swing open and the mountains shall pass away
and become vapour. Hell will lie in ambush, a home for the
transgressors. There they shall abide long ages; there they
shall taste neither refreshment nor any drink, save boiling
water and decaying filth: a fitting recompense. They
disbelieved in Our reckoning and roundly denied Our
revelations. But We counted all their doings and wrote them
down. We shall say: "Taste this: you shall have nothing but
mounting torment!" As for the righteous, they shall surely
triumph. Theirs shall be gardens and vineyards, and high-
bosomed maidens for companions: a truly overflowing cup.
98:5 The unbelievers among the People of the Book (i.e.
Christians and Jews) and the pagans shall burn for ever in the
fire of Hell. They are the vilest of all creatures. But of
all creatures those that embrace the Faith and do good works
are the noblest. God will reward them with the gardens of
Eden, gardens watered by running streams, where they shall
dwell for ever.
70:8 On that day the heavens shall become like molten brass,
and the mountains like tufts of wool scattered in the wind.
Friends shall meet, but shall not speak to one another. To
redeem himself from the torment of that day the sinner will
gladly sacrifice his children, his wife, his brother, the
kinsfolk who gave him shelter, and all the people of the earth,
if then this might deliver him. But the fire of Hell shall drag
him down by the scalp, shall claim him who has turned his back
on the true faith and amassed riches and covetously hoarded
them.
73:12 Bear patiently with what they say and leave their company
without recrimination. Leave to Me those that deny the truth,
those that enjoy the comforts of this life; bear with them yet
a little while. We have in store for them heavy fetters and a
blazing fire, choking food and a harrowing torment. This shall
be their lot on the day when the earth shakes with all its
mountains, and the mountains crumble into heaps of shifting
sand.
74:4 The day when the Trumpet sounds shall be a day of woe and
anguish for the unbelievers. Leave to Me the man whom I created
and endowed with vast riches and thriving children. I have made
his progress smooth and easy: yet he hopes for more. But
because he has stubbornly denied Our revelations, I will lay on
him a mounting torment.
19:35 Such was Jesus, the son of Mary. That is the whole
truth, which they are unwilling to accept. Allah forbid that
He Himself should beget a son! When He decrees a thing He need
only say : "Be", and it is. Allah is my Lord and your Lord:
therefore serve him. That is the right path. Yet the Sects are
divided concerning Jesus. But when the fateful day arrives, woe
to the unbelievers! Their sight and hearing shall be sharpened
on the day when they appear before Us. Truly, the unbelievers
are in the grossest error. {88} Those who say: "The Lord of
Mercy has begotten a son" preach a monstrous falsehood, at
which the very heavens might crack, the earth break asunder,
and the mountains crumble to dust. That they should ascribe a
son to the Merciful, when it does not become Him to beget one!
5:17 Unbelievers are those who declare: "Allah is the Messiah,
the son of Mary." {33} Those that make war against Allah and
His apostle and spread disorders in the land shall be put to
death or crucified or have their hands and feet cut off on
alternate sides, or be banished from the country. They shall
be held to shame in this world and sternly punished in the
next; except those who repent before you reduce them. For you
must know that Allah is forgiving and merciful. Believers,
have fear of Allah and seek the right path to Him. Fight
valiantly for His cause, so that you may triumph. As for the
unbelievers, if they offered all that the earth contains and as
much besides to redeem themselves from the torment of the Day
of Resurrection, it shall not be accepted from them. Theirs
shall be a woeful punishment. They will strive to get out of
the Fire, but they shall not; theirs shall be a lasting
judgment. As for the man or woman who is guilty of theft, cut
off their hands to punish them for their crimes. That is the
punishment enjoined by Allah. He is mighty and wise. {51}
Believers, take neither Jews nor Christians for your friends.
They are friends with one another. Whoever of you seeks their
friendship shall become one of their number. Allah does not
guide the wrongdoers. {56} Your only friends are Allah, His
apostle, and the faithful: those who attend to their prayers,
pay their alms-tax, and kneel down in worship. Those who seek
the friendship of Allah, His apostle, and the faithful must
know that Allah's followers are sure to triumph. {17}
Believers, do not seek the friendship of the infidels and those
who were given the Book before you, who have made of your
religion a jest and a pastime. {66} If the People of the Book
(i.e. Christians and Jews) accept the true faith and keep from
evil, We will pardon them their sins and admit them to the
gardens of delight. {71} Unbelievers are those that say:
"Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary." Unbelievers are those
that say: "Allah is one of three." There is one God. If they
do not desist from so saying, those that disbelieve shall be
sternly punished. The Messiah, the son of Mary, was no more
than an apostle: other apostles passed away before him. His
mother was a saintly woman. They both ate earthly food. {82}
You will find the most implacable of men in their enmity to the
faithful are the Jews and the pagans, and that the nearest in
affection to them are those who say : "We are Christians."
{116} Then Allah will say: 'Jesus, son of Mary, did you ever
say to mankind: "Worship me and my mother as gods beside
Allah?"' "Glory to You," he will answer, 'how could I say that
to which I have no right? If I had ever said so, You would have
surely known it. You know what is in my mind but I cannot tell
what is in Yours. You alone know what is hidden. I spoke to
them of nothing except what You bade me. I said: "Serve Allah,
my Lord and your Lord."
109:1 Say: "Unbelievers, I do not serve what you worship, nor
do you serve what I worship. I shall never serve what you
worship, nor will you ever serve what I worship. You have your
religion and I have mine".
6:100 Yet they regard the jinn as Allah's equals, though He
Himself created them, and in their ignorance ascribe to Him
sons and daughters. Glory to Him! Exalted be He above their
imputations! He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth.
How should he have a son when He had no consort? {125] If
Allah wills to guide a man, He opens his bosom to Islam. But if
He pleases to mislead him, He makes his bosom small and narrow
as though he were climbing to heaven. Thus Allah lays His
scourge on the unbelievers.
4:20 If you wish to divorce a woman in order to marry another,
do not take from her the dowry you have given her even if it be
a talent of gold. {24} You are forbidden to take in marriage
married women, except captives whom you own as slaves {34} Men
have authority over women because Allah has made the one
superior to the others, and because they spend their wealth to
maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen
parts because Allah has guarded them. As for those from whom
you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds
apart and beat them. Then if they obey you, take no further
action against them. Allah is high, supreme. {55} Those that
deny our revelations We will burn in Hellfire. No sooner will
their skins be consumed than We shall give them other skins, so
that they may truly taste Our scourge. Allah is mighty and
wise. As for those that have faith and do good works, We shall
admit them to gardens watered by running streams, where, wedded
to chaste virgins, they shall abide for ever. We shall admit
them to a cool shade. {74} Let those who would exchange the
life of this world for the hereafter, fight for the cause of
Allah; whether they die or conquer, We will richly reward them.
And how should you not fight for the cause of Allah, and for
the helpless old men, women, and children who say: "Deliver us,
Lord, from this city of wrongdoers; send forth to us a guardian
from Your presence; send to us one that will help us"? The true
believers fight for the cause of Allah, but the infidels fight
for idols. Fight then against the friends of Satan. Satan's
cunning is weak indeed. Mark those to whom it has been said:
"Lay down your arms; recite your prayers and pay the alms-tax."
When they were ordered to fight, some of them feared man as
much as Allah or even more. "Lord," they said, "Why do You bid
us fight? Could you not give us a brief respite?" Say:
"Trifling are the pleasures of this life. The hereafter is
better for those who would keep from evil. You shall not be
wronged the husk of a date-stone. Wherever you be, death will
overtake you: though you put yourself in lofty towers." {79}
We have sent you forth as an apostle to mankind. Allah is your
all-sufficient witness. He that obeys the Apostle obeys Allah
Himself. As for those that pay no heed to you, know then that
We have not sent you to be their keeper. They promise to obey
you: but as soon as they leave you a number of them plot in
secret to do otherwise than what you bade them. Allah takes not
of all their plots. {84} Therefore fight for the cause of
Allah. You are accountable for none but yourself. Rouse the
faithful; perchance Allah will defeat the unbelievers. He is
mightier and more truculent than they. {88} Why are you thus
divided concerning the hypocrites, when Allah Himself has cast
them off on account of their misdeeds? Would you guide those
whom Allah has caused to err? He whom Allah has led astray
cannot be guided. They would have you disbelieve as they
themselves have done, so that you may be all alike. Do not
befriend them until they have fled their homes for the cause of
Allah. If they desert you, seize them and put them to death
wherever you find them. {95} The believers who stay at home -
apart from those that suffer a grave impediment - are not equal
to those who fight for the cause of Allah with their goods and
their persons. Allah has given those that fight with their
goods and their persons a higher rank than those who stay at
home. He has promised all a good reward; but far richer is the
recompense of those who fight for Him: rank of His own
bestowal, forgiveness, and mercy. {99} He that leaves his
dwelling to fight for Allah and His apostle and is then
overtaken by death, shall be rewarded by Allah. {104} Seek out
your enemies relentlessly. If you have suffered, they too have
suffered: but you at least hope to receive from Allah what they
cannot hope for. {139} Allah has instructed you in the Book
that when you hear His revelations being denied or ridiculed
you must not sit and listen to them unless they engage in other
talk, or else you shall become like them. Allah will surely
gather in Hell the hypocrites and the unbelievers. {145}
Believers, do not choose the infidels rather than the faithful
for your friends. Would you give Allah a clear proof against
yourselves? The hypocrites shall be cast into the lowest
depths of Hell: there shall be none to help them. {155} They
denied the truth and uttered a monstrous falsehood against
Mary. They declared: "We have put to death the Messiah Jesus
the son of Mary, the apostle of Allah." They did not kill him,
nor did they crucify him, but they thought they did for he was
made to resemble another for them. Those that disagreed about
him were in doubt concerning his death, for what they knew
about it was sheer conjecture; they were not sure that they had
slain him. Allah lifted him up in His presence. He is mighty
and wise. {171} The Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, was no
more than Allah's apostle and His Word which he cast to Mary: a
spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His apostles and do
not say: "Three." Forbear and it shall be better for you.
Allah is but one God. Allah forbid that He should have a son!
8:12 Allah revealed His will to the angels, saying: "I shall be
with you. Give courage to the believers. I shall cast terror
into the hearts of the infidels. Strike off their heads, maim
them in every limb! Thus We punished them because they defied
Allah and His apostle. He that defies Allah and His apostle
shall be sternly punished. We said to them: "Feel our scourge.
Hellfire awaits the unbelievers." Believers, when you
encounter the armies of the infidels do not turn your backs to
them in flight. If anyone on that day turns his back to them,
except it be for tactical reasons, or to join another band, he
shall incur the wrath of Allah and Hell shall be his home: an
evil fate. It was not you, but Allah, who slew them. It was not
you who smote them: Allah smote them so He might richly reward
the faithful. He hears all and knows all. He will surely thwart
the designs of the unbelievers. {38} Tell the unbelievers that
if they mend their ways their past shall be forgiven; but if
they persist in sin, let them reflect upon the fate of their
forefathers. Make war on them until idolatry is no more and
Allah's religion reigns supreme. {51} If you could see the
angels when they carry off the souls of the unbelievers! They
shall strike them on their faces and their backs, saying: "Feel
the torment of Hell-fire! This is your punishment for what your
hands committed." Allah is not unjust to His servants. {60}
Let the unbelievers not think that they will escape Us. They
have not the power to do so. Muster against them all the men
and cavalry at your disposal, so that you may strike terror
into the enemies of Allah and the faithful, and others besides
them. All that you give for the cause of Allah shall be repaid
you. You shall not be wronged. {65} Prophet, rouse the
faithful to arms. If there are twenty steadfast men among you,
they shall vanquish two hundred; and if there are a hundred,
they shall rout a thousand unbelievers, for they are devoid of
understanding. {67} A prophet may not take captives until he
has fought and triumphed in his land.
9:4 Proclaim a woeful punishment to the unbelievers, except
those idolaters who have honoured their treaties with you and
aided none against you. With these keep faith until their
treaties have run their term. Allah loves the righteous. When
the sacred months are over slay the idolaters wherever you find
them. Arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere
for them. If they repent and take to prayer and pay the alms-
tax, let them go their way. Allah is forgiving and merciful.
{23} Believers, do not befriend your fathers or your brothers
if they choose unbelief in preference to faith. Wrongdoers are
those who befriend them. {29} Fight against such of those to
whom the Scriptures were given as believe neither in Allah nor
the Last Day, who do not forbid what Allah and His apostle have
forbidden, and do not embrace the true faith, until they pay
tribute out of hand and are utterly subdued. {30} The Jews say
Ezra is the son of Allah, while the Christians say the Messiah
is the son of Allah. Such are their assertions, by which they
imitate the infidels of old. Allah confound them! How perverse
they are! They worship their rabbis and their monks, and the
Messiah the son of Mary, as gods besides Allah; though they
were ordered to serve one God only. There is no god but Him.
Exalted be He above those whom they deify beside Him. {33} It
is He who has sent forth His apostle with guidance and the true
faith to make it triumphant over all religions, however much
the idolaters may dislike it. {34} Believers, many are the
rabbis and the monks who defraud men of their possessions and
debar them from the path of Allah. Proclaim a woeful punishment
to those that hoard up gold and silver and do not spend it in
Allah's cause. The day will surely come when their treasures
shall be heated in the fire of Hell, and their foreheads,
sides, and backs branded with them. Their tormentors will say
to them: "These are the riches which you hoarded. Taste then
the punishment which is your due." {38} Believers, why is it
that when it is said to you: "March in the cause of Allah," you
linger slothfully in the land? Are you content with this life
in preference to the life to come? Few indeed are the blessings
of this life, compared to those of the life to come. If you do
not fight He will punish you sternly and replace you by other
men. {68} Allah has promised the hypocrites, both men and
women, and the unbelievers, the fire of Hell. They shall abide
in it forever: a sufficient recompense. The curse of Allah is
upon them; theirs shall be a lasting torment. {123} Believers,
make war on the infidels who dwell around you.
2:135 They say: "Accept the Jewish or the Christian faith and
you shall be rightly guided." Say: "By no means! We believe in
the faith of Abraham, the upright one. He was no idolater."
{197} Make the pilgrimage in the appointed months. He that
intends to perform it in those months must abstain from sexual
intercourse, obscene language, and acrimonious disputes while
on pilgrimage. {216} Fighting is obligatory for you, much as
you dislike it. But you may hate a thing although it is good
for you, and love a thing although it is bad for you. {233}
Women are your fields: go, then, into your fields as you
please. {227} Those that renounce their wives on oath must
wait four months. {228} Divorced women must wait, keeping
themselves from men, three menstrual courses. {229} Divorce
may be pronounced twice, and then a woman must be retained in
honor or allowed to go with kindness. {231} When you have
renounced your wives and they have reached the end of their
waiting period, either retain them in honor or let them go with
kindness. But you must not retain them in order to harm them or
to wrong them.
