What is the essence of my Christianity? At bottom it is faithfulness to God, obedience to God. Just as a son is faithful and obedient to a father that he respects and loves, so I am faithful and obedient to God. For God is a father to me. He has always been one. He has taken care of me. It is to him that I have turned in my times of trouble (he is the only one you can turn to in times of real trouble). So, for me, the heart of my religion is faithfulness. God has always been good to me and I am faithful to him. I know his values. I know what he wants of me. I know he loves justice, fairness, decency, goodness, integrity and righteousness. I know I cannot be faithful to him and go against these values. I am constrained by my faithfulness to him to do what is right. I am constrained to obedience. He is my lord. I am his servant. I have made my commitment to him. I am determined to be faithful to my commitment. I know that as long as I am faithful to him he will be faithful to me. I know that as long as I am a good son to him he will be a good father to me. That is my faith. It is the most basic operating principle within me. It is what gives me life, confidence and strength.
