Clubs, circles and cliques
I just saw the YouTube video
No Friends Since 38 , and Why It's Okay | My Full Story.
Clique. a small group of people, with shared interests or other features in common, who spend time together and do not readily allow others to join them.
"the old-school clique"
Similar. coterie, circle, inner circle, crowd, in-crowd, set, group, pack, band, ring, mob, crew, club, society, fraternity, sorority, fellowship, camp, cartel, cabal, junta, caucus, cell, lobby, push, gang, bunch
Note that part of the idea of a clique is exclusion.
Def. Non-joiner. A non-joiner is a person who habitually avoids becoming a member of groups, organizations, or teams, often preferring independence over social or structured involvement.
I have always been a non-joiner.
I grew up in the country — on a dairy farm — and I have always been a very independent-minded person. From age 6 to 14 I attended a small one room country school in which there were only two or three other children of my age and perhaps because of that, or just a natural introvertive personality, I have always been a loner. I have a mind of my own and I value my intellectual independence. As a Christian I want to be free to be what I am, live in accordance with what I believe. I don’t drink, smoke, use drugs, or use bad, profane, or low language, and probably wouldn’t fit in with most groups. And I wouldn’t want pressures to do things I would disapprove of. I would indeed probably be rejected by most groups. Birds of a feather flock together — birds of different feather flock separately.
Although I enjoyed gym class in high school, I never participated in sports or was interested in sports. Although I might have conceivably enjoyed some sport I felt it was prudent to focus my time and effort on something I felt was far more important to me and my future: academic study. I understood then that I lived in a very unjust, hard world and my life could end up some sad disaster if I didn’t have a good degree. I was concerned about what my future might hold and was being proactive about it turning out well.
It seems to me that most people are gregarious creatures who like to join groups. You see it in the cliques and gangs of young people, in exclusive cliques and clubs among the wealthy, etc.
People are sheep. They follow others. They don’t like to think for themselves. They copy. Their opinions and thoughts are all the thoughts of others. One fool leads and ten thousand fools follow.
