The gigantic chasm that can exist between cultures
One thing most people fail to appreciate is how very radically different people of different cultures can think, feel and look at things. This is especially true in regard to the topics of love, sex and marriage. The following video about the topic of love, sex, and marriage in India illustrates what I am talking about:
Here is an illustration of a culture that is so radically different from ours that it is pretty much impossible for a person of our culture to understand the mind of a person of that culture (or a person of that culture to understand a western person).
On the last term of my freshman year in college I had a graduate student in petroleum geology as a roommate who was a Moslem from Iran. He told me he had a very bad opinion of Americans (but he excepted me). He spoke of how teenage boys and girls held hands and kissed right out in public. That was something he just couldn’t wrap his mind around or accept. It was something just too alien to the way he was raised for him to accept it. For him it was highly immoral.
My mind and outlooks has been shaped by the Bible. I have been reading it since I was nine years old. The outlooks and attitudes of my society (western society) have become radically different from those found in the New Testament (even though western society evolved from the Christian religion). I personally don’t have any respect for western society. In regard to its views on love, sex and marriage I view it as highly degenerate and depraved. I look at YouTube videos made by young people of Japan or China and these young people seem so fresh and innocent and wholesome. It seems like there is just a big gap between them and young people of my society. And I don’t think it is just my perception. See
