What is the best political system?
What is the best political system? Democracy? Republic? Dictatorship? What is the best economic system? Capitalism? Communism? As with about anything in life, any system you propose has its pluses and minuses, advantages and disadvantages. One almost never gets perfection in anything in this life.
When you have a country containing a great diversity of people in regard to ideas, attitudes, values, religious beliefs, etc. it can be impossible to obtain consensus on almost anything. What one person favors another detests with passion. In our country some people believe in capitalism, others in different levels of socialism, and others in Communism. These are very disparate ideas and one cannot expect friendly consensus in such a system. You must expect confrontation and conflict. Most people want our current legal system of U. S. law but Moslems would like Sharia law. With such diversity one cannot hope to please everyone. No matter what system you have there will be anger and resentment. If you have a system built on Christian values and beliefs and you then introduce homosexuals to your system and then give them a lot of rights and privileges (when Christianity condemns homosexuality as immoral), you can then expect conflict. You cannot expect to please both Christian and homosexual any more than you can expect to please both God and Satan. If a country contains many religious people and also many atheists, you can expect conflict, hostility, and anger. Religion and atheism are not compatible. In general, the more homogeneous the people of a land, the more peaceful it will be (an observation that is just common sense).
How can you construct a system of peace and order when you have great diversity and passionate disagreement? You can make a lot of anti-discrimination laws but that won’t prevent anger and hatred.
What do I think of our current system as set up by our founding fathers back in the 1770's? I am not very impressed with it. I don’t think it is so great. It may sound really great on paper but in practice I see big problems. It seems to me like a cart with horses hooked to both front and back, pulling in opposite directions. With horses pulling at both ends the cart goes nowhere. Example: I think the school system here in this country is terrible. It is doing a terrible job. It is turning out young people that can’t read or write. Or do arithmetic. I think that is shocking — a real tragedy. I think a wise person would feel that there could be no higher priority in any country than a really good school system (that a poor school system was just totally unacceptable). Something has really needed to be done for years about this but change has been blocked by politics, teacher’s unions, etc. I think that is terrible. For a system like ours to work well, one needs an educated populace. But I think most people are more interested in pursuing money — or watching pornography, football, or baseball — or in pursuing sex and pleasure than in politics. A Communist runs for office in our country and people query Google asking what Communism is.
Another example is the immigration problem in our country. We have millions and millions of people living here illegally. Immigration in this country has long been a huge fiasco. This is an important issue. This should not be. How many other countries are so lax in this regard? I am sure I could fix the problem. It might require national ID cards but I could fix it. The real reason it has never been solved is the same reason we aren’t able to solve any other problem. Politics. One political party blocking anything the other party wants to do.
I personally detest liberals and it seems to me that liberals fight for their foolish and ill-advised ideas based on their own bad assumptions and false narratives and usually win because the conservatives give in and go along. I see this tendency going all the way back to the 1960's. The conservatives just don’t seem able to articulate an intelligent opposing argument. I think most of the legislation since the 1960's has been wrong-headed.
I have come to have a very low opinion of politicians, both liberal and conservative. I think they have no principles. I think their main priority is just keeping their jobs, getting re-elected. That just requires a lot of great sounding rhetoric. Our political system requires just too much compromise, too much horse-trading, too much moral bending, to get anything done and that destroys character in a politician. And it is just so easy for politicians to spend taxpayer money on all kinds of social programs and projects for the sake of votes — because it is other people’s money, not their own money that they are spending. And I think it is mostly squandered money — I don’t think most of the social programs work. And they create programs such as those that support single women with children giving women a perverse incentive to have illegitimate children — which is a root cause of many of our social problems. It is not right to take people’s (taxpayer’s) money from them and waste it on bad programs. I am a frugal person who believes in economy in my personal life. I think the country would be much better governed using my money-conscious, frugal mind-set.
So I am not impressed with our system. Can I propose a better system? I am not sure I can. Although the system is terrible, it might be about as good as you can do. All of the great diversity of outlook and opinion in our country, all of the strongly held opposing opinions, all of the powerful forces pulling in opposite directions, creates a problem that I am not sure how to deal with. I think the best system might be a dictatorship if you had a wise, good, prudent, sensible person at the head of it. A wise and good dictator could do things that needed to be done; things that prudent, wise people would do. But knowing what I do of human nature and considering history, I would be very reluctant to recommend that. A dictator can easily become a monster.
We are now in the Trump era. I am conservative but I am not impressed with Trump. And I am not impressed with his sycophantic followers. One thing I really do like that Trump has done is to get rid of DEI.
I think that the things that most conservatives feel very strongly about are not issues that I feel most strongly about. The issue that I feel most strongly about is our countries’ drift away from God and Biblical morality and toward atheism.
In regard to economic systems, I don’t think Communism works. I think all experiments with it have proven that it doesn’t. The free enterprise system works best but it has problems. Our system has given us a great deal in terms of technological innovation and easy living but one of the most important things a person needs in life is a job as a source of income and with all of the automation, machines and computers doing everything, and with an expected coming AI revolution, it is not clear to me that there will be enough jobs for everyone (or even nearly enough). If that happens, how will we solve that problem? Government support for those without jobs? Then everyone will choose not to work.
I hear people debate politics on YouTube and other media. Everyone has his opinions. They talk in such generalities and with so many tacit assumptions. I suspect most of too much reading, too much dogma — and talking foolishness. I am talking about conservatives. As for liberals, they are in their own grotesque LGBTQ fantasyland echochamber.
