Conservative countries and liberal countries
It is my understanding that China is a very conservative country. Its people believe in hard work, are modest in dress, take sexual morality seriously, and disapprove of tattoos. Chinese young people don’t start dating until they get to their early 20s and it is a great disgrace for a Chinese girl if she is not a virgin when she gets married. This is a culture that has evolved over thousands of years and its outlook is conservative. I understand that at least many Buddhists are very morally conservative and have the same kind of moral outlooks as morally conservative Christians. They are conservative in their dress and chaste in their conduct and language. I think most oriental peoples are conservative in their outlooks and behavior. Moslems are very conservative in their attitudes and behavior.
I have great respect for a morally conservative person. That is probably because I grew up reading the Bible and the Bible is a very conservative book. I remember when I was a young boy I had no good opinion of a promiscuous type of person. (I suspect that I was influenced greatly by the influence of my mother. She had no good opinion of morally promiscuous people.) Morality has a lot to do with my estimation of a person’s worth. I don’t see a sexually promiscuous person as being worth much. He certainly makes a very bad impression on me. I would have a hard time seeing any good in him.
Something started happening in the western world starting in the early 1500s, perhaps around the time of the Protestant Reformation, with the tendency to question old assumptions and beliefs. First intellectuals started questioning the assumptions of Catholicism. Then they started questioning other things like the reliability and trustworthiness of the Bible and then finally the existence of a god. They took the scientific attitude of questioning everything. And gradually we ended up where we are today: the liberal, modern western society where atheistic, secular humanism is the prevailing philosophical outlook. The modern western world has shed all of its conservative Biblical outlooks and now depends on psychology, psychiatry and “science” for its assumptions and beliefs. The result is that the most of the people have lost all of their moral beliefs, restraints and inhibitions. The proof of this is revealed by the rates of child illegitimacy that one finds throughout the western world. See
What are the most moral countries of the world?
Hedonistic outlooks prevail in popular music and drama. If you look into the lives of most of the modern novelists you find that they were mostly morally degenerate. The common person of today’s society is immersed in the new modern outlook as promoted by the mass media, the school system, etc. The old conservative outlook has disappeared. How can anyone have respect for his neighbor knowing the degenerate attitudes and values that prevail throughout the society?
The problem is not science. It is possible to believe in science and still believe in a God and in moral absolutes.
I look about me and so many people have tattoos. What does that mean? I don’t know what to make of it but I wouldn’t allow anyone to put a tattoo on me for anything.
There is a world of difference between a conservative country and a liberal country. If I were young I would certainly consider moving to the orient. I believe the West has lost its way. The kind of neighbors I would want around me would be conservative type people. I am unable to feel much empathy for degenerate type people.
