A dose of reality

Some people grow up very sheltered from reality. Especially I think this is true for children of rich people. They tend to grow up protected from many things, are given a lot of advantages, educational and otherwise, go to some Ivy League college, get indoctrinated into a bunch of liberal, socialist ideas, and then go directly to work in some government office. You could say they then start trying to fix their society’s problems when they have never really experienced the real world. What quality of personal judgment can you expect of a person like that? I also had a very sheltered childhood. I grew up on a dairy farm, went to a small, one room country school, and attended a nearby Baptist church two or three times a week. I was a dreamer and as long as I was supported by my parents and protected from the larger world (like most children) I was able to dream. And in those days there was no YouTube to give one an idea of how things are in some poor places in the world.

My father received a good dose of reality when he was a teenager when he had to drop out of high school in the ninth grade to help his father cut railroad ties with a cross cut saw — him at one end and his father at the other end. It was during the depression, his father had lost his factory job, and this was the only work his father could find to support his family. (Later my father did go back to school and complete his high school education.)

During the 1970s, during the Vietnam war, many young American boys were introduced to a dose of reality when they were drafted into the military and sent to Vietnam to fight there.

Many young children in our society and others are introduced to reality when they are sexually abused and perverted by some adult at some innocent age like four or five or six years old.

Many young people (female and male) are introduced to reality when they forced into the sex trade in this country and in many others.

Life has its uglinesses.

In some countries like Japan and South Korea a large percentage of people, especially people in their 20s and 30s, have short-term type jobs, working for contracting companies. They work for companies who do contract work for other companies. Often these companies are financially wobbly due to the highly competitive, cut-throat business environment. Employees lose their jobs and are forced to find other jobs frequently because their employers go out of business. When the business cycle is at a low and there are few jobs, many people may be without jobs. Life under capitalism can be very dog-eat-dog, cold and heartless. A large portion of single people in their 20s and 30s in Japan and South Korea remain single because of low income and financial insecurity and instability. They don’t make enough money to support a family. They can barely support themselves.

The countries of Central and South America provide examples of areas of the world where there is a dearth of good, well-paying jobs. It is no doubt why the US has so many people trying to come in illegally. People come for jobs.
