The pursuit of Truth
Sometimes we make statements that are quite vague in meaning.
I consider myself to be a person in search for truth. What do I mean? What is “truth”?
Def. Truth. That which is true or in accordance with fact or reality; the body of real things, events, and facts.
By the above definition, the idea of truth is much the same as the idea of fact. But I point out that the set of all facts in the universe is infinite. All of the countless events that have occurred in the various civilizations of man over the millennia is part of the body of all fact. All of the details of geography in countries around the world are fact. The actions of the New York police department on a particular day of the year are fact. The actions of a particular arctic wolf on a particular day is fact. The set of all facts is an infinite ocean. Thus the assertion that I am a person in search of truth would seem to be absurd. What do I mean?
I mean in that great body of all fact there certain facts which have very great importance in living life. An example is that teaching of Jesus, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” This precept was also taught by Confucius and Buddha. There are certain facts of life, certain basic truths, that are very important in living life, important to having a good and happy life. People of thought and understanding have understood them and stated them over the centuries. One can find many in the Book of Proverbs in the Bible. Thoughtful men have spoken of the importance of things like hard work, perseverance, self-reliance, self-discipline, economy, simplicity, honesty, morality, humility, chastity, kindness, patience, and peacefulness. They represent ways of living, personal habits, that a few people understand and follow but the vast majority of people do not understand or follow. Most people are so occupied with the pursuit of pleasure, social acceptance, friends, money, status, power, etc. that they never understand the importance of certain basic spiritual truths.
