The importance of a cheerful spirit

I don’t think that reading generally produces any profound impact on people in the following sense: I don’t think it will generally produce any fundamental change in their basic personal habits, outlook and personality. For example, when people read things that I have to say on my website I don’t think that my words are likely to make any real change in their basic personal attitudes and habits. What I say may be interesting to them but it is soon forgotten. Other people telling you of some profound truth is not the same as suddenly realizing that truth for yourself. It is only when a person discovers a truth himself that a basic change in the way he thinks, acts, and lives can occur.

One of the most important truths that one can discover is the value of maintaining a cheerful spirit when around people. This is especially true in the home around your spouse and family. But it is true wherever you are. When around people maintain an even, pleasant, cheerful spirit. It makes a big difference. A big difference for you. And for them. A spirit of cheerfulness is within the power of all of us and is a very important lesson to learn in life.

See On Cheerfulness

For many years I lacked confidence in myself and carried a lot of anger and hostility towards society in general. This caused a lot of hangups, personal frustration and problems. It was only after I had gotten past this stage of my life of lack of confidence, anger and hostility that I was able to relax and reflect and appreciate a lot of important truths in life.

Another important truth that I only belatedly came to appreciate: The profound importance of humility in living life. Humility is extremely importance to mental health, mental development, and happiness in living life. I now understand the reason for the great emphasis that the Bible places on it.

See On pride and humility

Pride brings with it a great host of problems.

People think they can be any way they wish to be. And they can if they wish. They can be ugly, ornery, nasty, bad-tempered, arrogant, impolite, rude, abusive and many other such things if they wish. What they don’t realize is that when they act in these ways they are really hurting themselves more than they are hurting anyone else. They don’t know it but they are. Why? Because they are establishing bad habits for themselves, habits that will come to define them. We are creatures of habit and our habits turn into chains that control us. And for some reason ugly, unpleasant, antisocial habits cause us lots of problems. Often deep and difficult problems. Never underestimate the damage that bad habits can do. We need to know how to deal with our fellow man. We need to treat him right.

See Stay away from these demons: Pride, Anger, Hatred, Lust, Envy and Jealousy

The Bible contains a tremendous amount of profound truth. Look to the teachings of Jesus. He taught us how to treat our fellow man. There is far more profound truth there than most people have any idea.
