On responding to Putin’s threat to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine
I am going to give my opinion on how best to respond to Putin’s threat to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine. I think the most prudent response is a firm, unequivocal public statement that if he uses them we (NATO, the United States) will respond in kind with nuclear weapons. If he knows that using them will bring a sure nuclear response I think that the chances are extremely low that he will use them. If, on the other hand, he senses fear and timidity and thinks he can get away with it, I think the chances are relatively high that he will use them. I think that cowardice and timidity here puts not only all the countries of Europe but also the USA at real risk. Fearfulness, cowardice, a weak response, invites danger and serious consequence. Remember the case of Hitler and the initial fearfulness and timidity in dealing with him. Remember Neville Chamberlain and the Munich agreement of September 1938 ceding the German-speaking Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia to Nazi Germany. That was the fearful, cowardly route and note what happened.
I think our response to Putin’s threat to use nuclear weapons has been weak — very weak. I am guessing Biden’s fearfulness and timidity are responsible for that weakness. He wants to preserve all of his options, including negotiations and surrender. It does seem to me that the western response to this Putin invasion of Ukraine has been characterized by a great deal of fearfulness and timidity from the beginning. Fearfulness and timidity by both the United States and some of the countries of Europe (I won’t name them.). We have been very much fearful of getting involved there and coming face to face with Russia. We could have supplied Ukraine with aircraft and much better weaponry right in the beginning if we had wished. The big overruling restraint has been fear of getting into a war with Russia.
The only way to respond to a bully is with courage and force. Fearfulness and cowardice only encourages him.
I think Biden has come across over and over as a coward. I think Putin sensed that cowardice and that is why he had the nerve to invade Ukraine.
