The answer
Life is often hard and often unfair.
Life can be very difficult, especially for those of us who were not born with a lot of natural advantages such as wealthy parents, influential friends, good looks, special talents or abilities, etc. Many of us struggle and have a hard, frustrating time of it.
Things are seldom what they appear, purport to be, or should be. Lies are everywhere. The Devil is everywhere. Injustice and unfairness is everywhere. People make choices and their choices are often the wrong ones. They succumb to temptations, make mistakes, take the wrong roads. They follow the crowd and the crowd leads them wrong. Our own basic natures deceive us and lead us wrong, cause us to act wrongly. People follow all the ways of pleasure. They follow alcohol, drugs, sex, pornography, chocolate cake, and ice cream. And in the end they pay for it.
Life is all about personal judgment, choices, and decisions. Because of the basic nature of man most of humanity is usually making the wrong choices and decisions all the time. People become saddled with bad habits that pull them down. They become caught in quagmires that they can’t get out of (as with the drug addict and alcoholic).
Imprudence and foolishness has consequences. The foolish child who didn’t work hard and master the basics in his school years pays for it later.
Life can produce great stresses. Some people have very good reason for fear. Fear can be a great stressor.
It is my strong suspicion that the vast majority of people go through periods of their lives when they feel deeply confused, unhappy, and mixed up; prey to feelings of fear, insecurity, and self-doubt.
It is an unfortunate fact of life that the basic nature of man is responsible for a great portion of his problems. His own natural inclinations can cause big problems. Things like pride, hatred, inner anger, envy, jealousy, lust, and greed can wreak all kinds of havoc in man and cause him great unhappiness. His desire for popularity and approval causes him to follow the crowd and the crowd is usually on the Devil’s road. Sexual passion and infatuation. Desire! Sexual desire! That passion that can roll over all else and cause conduct that can destroy a life! A cause of great mischief in this world. Perhaps the biggest troublemaker of all.

So what is the answer? How can a man avoid all of these pitfalls and have a happy life? Do I have an answer to that question? I think I do. I am 82 years old. I am totally convinced that God has watched out over me and my wife in a special way in this life. God has been active in my life. I have seen evidence of that over and over and over. It is for real. And I believe that what he has done for me he will do for anyone who really takes him seriously. The answer lies in religion — the right religion, the true religion. It lies in God, Christianity, following the teachings of the Bible. It lies in a right relationship with God, obedience to God.
