Philosophy as well as foppery often changes fashion
The following is a quotation from Poor Richard’s Almanac:
Philosophy as well as foppery often changes fashion.
I don’t know what observations on changing philosophies led to this assertion but all of this political correctness / Wokeness / Cultural Marxism that is so powerfully affecting modern America (and the rest of the modern western world) is certainly some sick intellectual fad and I am waiting for it to go out of fashion. I have watched it develop for at least the last 50 years and I don’t see any light at the end of the tunnel yet so I am not holding my breath. However, it is certainly foolishness and I don’t see how intellectual foolishness can continue forever. People must certainly come to see the Truth sooner or later.
The origin of intellectual foolishness usually seems to be some book with some new ideas that some intellectual egghead writes (as with Karl Marx and his ideas). Then other intellectuals pick up the idea and spread it. The idea then moves from university to university, professors teach it to students, and it comes into fashion as an idea and everyone starts accepting and spreading the idea. And it then starts being implemented into governmental actions and affecting everyone. In this way prestigious universities become the source of high intellectual foolishness. One would not really expect high foolishness to originate in universities. What does that fact tell one? It informs one of the gullibility and susceptibility to foolishness of highly educated minds. And it informs one of how dangerous is mankind’s proneness for following others, following fashion. Man is not a highly rational creature. He is an irrational creature who is easily influenced and easily deceived and acts more from feelings than mind.
I think it is very interesting how prone people are to the following of fashion. Whether it is fashion in clothes or fashion in ideas, mankind is forever following fashions. Most people are not thinkers. They are mostly creatures of feeling, emotional bias. They are followers, copiers. Few people really think for themselves. They have little confidence in their own ability to arrive at truth. But they trust some fool. Sometimes the simplest people have the most common sense.
I think it is very interesting and frightening at how easily the minds of the masses can be manipulated. Hitler understood this and what he and those under him were able to do in this regard in Nazi Germany is an eternal testament to that fact. All authoritarian governments know their power to influence and mold the minds of their subjects. All it takes is the willingness to lie and keep repeating the lie.
A lot of conservative type people in the USA see the foolishness in the ideas, beliefs, and false narratives of the Liberal Left. But do enough see it? And with all of our schools indoctrinating our school children in Liberal falsehoods and lies, what does the future hold? Whether Truth or Lie wins out remains to be seen.
