On bigotry

I found the following definition of bigot on the internet:

A bigot is a person who is intolerant of opinions, lifestyles, or identities that are different from their own.

The definition comes from the Simple English Wikipedia.

I would say that this is the way the liberal Left uses the term bigot. That is their concept of a bigot. If a person doesn’t accept their depraved, immoral lifestyle he is a bigot. If he doesn’t accept homosexuality he is a bigot. If he is inflexible in his opinions on questions of right and wrong, he is a bigot.

I have to confess that by that definition I am a bigot. I would say that by that definition any true Christian is a bigot. The Bible takes very strong stands on certain kinds of conduct. From the Ten Commandments we learn that murder is wrong, stealing is wrong, lying is wrong, adultery is wrong, etc. The Bible teaches that people who engage in certain kinds of behavior will go to hell. If a person feels strongly about certain types of behavior being wrong, he will not be accepting of opinions or lifestyles that conflict with his beliefs.

This is all related to the question of whether there are moral absolutes or not. The Bible teaches moral absolutes. The Bible holds that Jehovah God is the creator of this universe and the Bible contains his commandments on how man is to live. According to the Biblical outlook some conduct is right and some is wrong. It is that simple. However, if you are coming from the perspective of the Liberal, then your outlook is that of an atheist, and with atheism there are no absolutes. Right and Wrong is all just a matter of opinion. One person has one opinion and another person has another opinion. There is no god or authority to say what is right or wrong. It is because of this that there is such a great gulf separating the Bible believer from the Liberal. They differ in their most basic premises. There is no way to reconcile their differences.

This idea of bigotry is connected to the concept of moral standards. A person with moral standards is not going to accept opinions or behavior that are in violation of his moral standards. Thus, by this definition, you can say he is a bigot. On the other hand, a person devoid of all moral standards is receptive to all opinions and lifestyles and thus is free of bigotry.
