Resisting a great force. Struggle.
Frustration. Struggle. Trying to resist a great force that is pulling you toward your own destruction. I am sure a skid row alcoholic or drug addict would know this feeling. You are faced with a force that you absolutely must resist for your own sake. Well, when I think back to my teen years I remember this feeling, this sort of struggle with such a force. It went on for years. What am I talking about? I am talking about that powerful force that we all know about that comes with the onset of puberty — the sexual force. With the arrival of that force I instinctively knew that if I got involved with some girl and got her pregnant I would be under moral obligation to marry her and that would be the end of my education and my future. I felt that it was absolutely essential that I finish high school and go on to college and get a degree. I felt getting a good education was imperative for me and I had a lot of work and a long struggle ahead of me. (I knew I had some weaknesses, especially the trait of being slow, and I feared my weaknesses could cause me problems in holding onto jobs. And so I felt insecure due to my weaknesses.) I knew that it was absolutely essential that I stay away from girls until I had a good education and a good job. Girls coupled with that great force posed a real threat to me. Was I wrong? No, I was not wrong. I was absolutely right. I had the good sense to know what I had to do. My education has been very important for me. Without it it is hard to say how my life would have gone. But it all meant a lot of frustration and struggle.
