Two kinds of people
Over the years I have especially noted two particular kinds of people:
Kind 1. These people are BAD all the way through. They are highly dishonest. They have no conscience. They don’t care a bit about their fellow man. Given the opportunity they will rip him off without conscience. They will lie, cheat, steal, plunder when the opportunity presents. They are predators. They will rip off their own mother and father. But on the surface they may be gregarious, friendly and even very helpful. They may seem like very nice people. In reality they are schemers and their friendliness and helpfulness has purpose. If caught red-handed and confronted in some bad act they will deny, lie, fabricate, and defend themselves vigorously. They will put on a real show.
There are a great many people in this group. I am not sure how many but I have seen so many that I am convinced that there are a lot more than most people would guess. The group includes a whole lot of people at the low end of the totem pole (low income, poorly educated type people), and a whole lot of people at the high end of the totem pole (business owners, professional people with good jobs, etc.).
Kind 2. These people are good. They are honest, treat their fellow man fairly, treat him right. They are concerned about their neighbor, will do him no injustice or wrong.
I don’t think there are very many people in this group, but they do exist.
Most people fall in between these two groups. However, from what I have seen over my life, I believe the vast majority of people are not very good and are much closer to Kind 1 than Kind 2. I believe most people will steal and cheat if the opportunity presents itself and care very little about their fellow man and his interests. (Jan 17, 2020 — I just came across a statistic that confirms this impression for the people of my country, the USA — and provides a quantitative measure of it: In a study comparing dropped phones and wallets in New York and Tokyo, 88% of phones “lost” by the researchers were handed into the police by Tokyo residents, compared to 6% of the ones “lost” in New York. Likewise, 80% of Tokyo wallets were handed in compared to 10% in New York. Source: Why Japan is so successful at returning lost property . If you find a lost pocketbook there is identification in it and you will return it to its owner if you are an honest person. If you don’t, you are a thief and you don’t care about your fellow man. Only 10% of pocketbooks were returned in New York. That is a statistic on the number of honest people in New York. Losing a pocketbook is a big deal for anyone. It is not just the money. It is the identifications, medical cards, credit cards, etc. that need to be replaced at a great deal of hassle and trouble. You know what I mean. Not returning it reveals great indifference to your fellow man. It reveals a general attitude carried toward others — you just don’t care about them.)
Very sadly, I have discovered that a great many people who pretend to be religious, who make a lot of being religious, are also highly dishonest and have no scruples about doing their fellow man wrong. They may be the worse person around. They attempt to use a cloak of religiousness with a lot of disgusting insincere pious cant to hide their evil intentions. One understands people by their actions, not their words.
