Born to lose
For most people the temptation of having pleasure, and having it now, overpowers prudence. They just can’t resist the temptation. Whether it is the temptation presented by a big piece of chocolate cake, a high sugar soda, a big delicious meal, that expensive piece of clothing or expensive toy that you really want but don’t need, or illicit sex, it is Pleasure Now that wins. Desire wins. In its contest with Desire, Prudence loses. Prudence calls for doing those things that are in our general best interest, things that will make your future happiest and best — and not doing things that carry high risk of damaging your future. Studying hard in school is prudent. Not studying is imprudent. Very often those things that offer pleasure now have high risk of causing pain for you in the future. They pose dangers for your future. The delicious goodies and big meals cause you to gain weight. That is bad for your health. Eating high calorie goodies and big meals create personal habits that cause health problems. The illicit affair will later cause you pain in one way or another. The money you spent on that article of clothing that you didn’t need would do you much more good drawing interest in a bank account. Usually the most prudent course is one of self-discipline, self-denial, abnegation, abstinence. So people choose Pleasure Now and end up with another thorn in their flesh, stone in their shoe, to bedevil them for years in their journey through life. They drink alcohol, use drugs. These things impair and muddle the most important thing a person has — his good sense. And use of these mind altering substances causes them to do foolish things that will affect them the rest of their lives.
Illicit sexual affairs mess people’s lives up. See The Bible on fornication and adultery .
Pleasure. People just love pleasure.
People love to be entertained. They love to be made happy. They love things that enchant. Music enchants. That is why churches include a lot of music in their services. It is what people like. It draws in people, makes for big congregations and increases the bottom line (church income). But what does enchantment do to Reason, clear thinking, understanding?
Def. Enchant. 1. To put a spell upon; bewitch. 2. To charm completely; delight.
Answer: Enchantment obfuscates Reason, clear thought.
How people do love things that deceive!
Prudence. Reason. Good sense. Truth.
Love of Pleasure.
How Love of Pleasure does rule in most people!
Designed to lose. You could say that most people are designed to lose. Designed to mess themselves up. Born to lose!
