On the power of kindness

A person who trains dogs knows the importance of kindness in dealing with them. Behind an affectionate and good dog is probably affectionate, kind treatment. Behind an ugly, bad, vicious dog is probably abusive, bad treatment. Kindness engenders affection and friendliness. Meanness engenders anger, hatred, and viciousness. An animal may be limited in how well it understands words but there are some things it does understand very well. It understands kindness. This is true not only of dogs but of most animals. Animals understand the meaning of kindness. And they also understand the meaning of meanness and abuse.

The above applies not only to animals but also, to a large extent, to people. Kindness usually brings out the good in people. Abusive, bad treatment brings out anger, hatred, and viciousness in them. There are many people who are unkind or abusive to those they are closest to — their spouses, children, etc.. One cannot expect good results from abusive treatment.

Having said all this I cannot present kindness as the cure for all problems. I have known a lot of cases of psychologically messed up people who came to a bad end in spite of all of the attempts of those closest to them to help them. Once a person has become emotionally messed up due to childhood abuse, drug addiction, sexual abuse, etc. I think the prognosis for him is poor. I have known a few cases of people adopting psychologically messed up children in the hope of helping them. They may spend all kinds of money on them, think they can help them with money. I am not optimistic about their ability to help them. I think the only person who can help a badly messed up person is himself. I would prescribe reading the Bible, solitude, thought, reflection, self-examination. A confused person needs to discover his own mistakes by thinking and questioning. He needs to arrive at a change in his basic outlooks, attitudes, and values — a change in basic mental habits. I definitely would not recommend a psychiatrist. I do think my website might be a big help to him.
