The virtuous man is driven by a sense of moral responsibility; the bad man by the love of money
I think there is profound truth in the following quotation:
The virtuous man is driven by responsibility, the non-virtuous man is driven by profit.
Confucius
The good man is driven (ruled) by a sense of moral responsibility, of moral obligation and the bad man may be driven by different things but one of the most common is avarice, greed, money. The good man knows what things he ought to do and those are the things he does. He knows he has moral obligations not only to others but also to himself. He has an obligation to himself to be honest and truthful, to do the right thing in regard to other people, etc. He has within him a knowledge of what that right thing is that he ought to do and he knows it is very important to do it. Rule by a sense of moral obligation and obedience to God are closely connected. God wants us to do those things that we ought to do.
And you cannot serve God and also serve money. Jesus said:
Matt 6:24 No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
Money is a good servant, but a poor master.
D. Bouhours
Confucius made some other deeply profound statements:
The superior man thinks always of virtue; the common man thinks of comfort.
The object of the superior man is truth.
The gentleman understands what is right, whereas the petty man understands profit.
The superior man is modest in his speech, but exceeds in his actions.
The superior man examines his heart, that there may be nothing wrong there, and that he may have no cause for dissatisfaction with himself.
What the superior man seeks is in himself. What the mean man seeks is in others.
Men's natures are alike, it is their habits that carry them far apart.
