A basic fact of life: life is filled with foolishness
One of the most important things I long ago understood about life is this: life is just filled with foolishness. Nothing is as it ought to be. Few things are as represented. Life is filled with illusion and mirage. Most of what you hear or read is falsehood or half-truth. People spend their lives chasing after illusions. People lie, cheat, deceive, fabricate, twist, and pervert for their own purposes. Whether one is talking about the school system, the court system, government, politics, the mass media, the work world, or whatever, life is filled with foolishness, idiocy, madness, sham, and comedy.
Thus one can never be sure of any kind of justice. For this reason one ought never to be too confident of oneself. Things can always turn against you.
All of this speaks for habits of caution, prudence, and frugality. If you want to find happiness in life, you cannot just believe what you hear or read. You have to doubt, question, examine. You can’t just trust the outlooks, attitudes and views of the crowd. You have to think for yourself.
There is one thing I do trust, however. I trust the Bible. I trust the authority and reliability of the Bible. I trust the message of Jesus Christ and the teachings of the New Testament. Thus in all of the foolishness, I do have an anchor. I believe implicitly in an afterlife, a heaven, and a hell.
