On humility and meekness



The Bible places much emphasis on humility and meekness. God has a very strong bias against pride and arrogance. Jesus taught the importance of humility and meekness. Let us look at some definitions:



Humble. Having or showing a modest estimate of one's own importance; free from pride or vanity.


Syn.    meek, deferential, respectful, submissive, diffident, self-effacing, unassertive; modest, unassuming, self-deprecating



Meek. Quiet, gentle, and easily imposed on; submissive.


Syn.    submissive, yielding, obedient, compliant, tame, biddable, tractable, acquiescent, humble, deferential, timid, unprotesting, unresisting; quiet, mild, gentle, docile, lamblike, shy, diffident, unassuming, self-effacing



Differential. Showing deference; respectful.

 

Syn.    dutiful, obedient, submissive, complaisant



Modest. Unassuming or moderate in the estimation of one's abilities or achievements.

 

Syn.    self-effacing, self-deprecating, humble, unpretentious, unassuming, unpresuming, unostentatious, unshowy, unflashy

Psa 138:6 Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.


Psa 25:9 The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.


Psa 37:11 But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.


Prov 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.


Mat 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.           Words of Jesus
