The serious person verses the unserious, easygoing person

Personality traits go in groups. One group is the serious, determined, strong-willed group:

_________________________________________________________________________

Serious Group.

Def. Serious. adj. Grave and serious in quality, feeling, or disposition; thoughtful; sober.

                                                                                                            Funk & Wagnalls Dictionary

earnest, humorless, no-nonsense, resolute, determined, diligent, perseverant, strong-willed, strong-minded, self-controlled, self-disciplined, self-reliant, prudent, careful, thrifty, frugal

Ant. jocular, jesting, joking, playful, carefree, easygoing, insincere, unserious, uncandid, disingenuous, empty, hollow, superficial, shallow

Def. Self-reliant. Reliant on one’s own abilities, resources, or judgment.

                                                                                    Funk & Wagnalls Dictionary

Syn. Independence, self-sufficiency

The serious person thinks ahead and takes the wise, prudent path even though it may be the hard path requiring a lot of courage and effort. He is energetic, diligent, resolute and does the things he knows he should do.

A contrasting group is the carefree, easygoing, jocular, jesting, unserious group:

Carefree, easygoing group.

● irresolution, indecision, irresoluteness, undeterminedness, uncertainty, weak-willed, fickle, frivolous, irresponsible, unreliable, undependable, impulsive, impetuous, unthinking, unreasoning, thoughtless

● Inattentive, heedless, unobserving, undiscerning, unperceiving, unreflecting, incurious, uninquisitive, uninquiring

● Frivolous, shallow, superficial, featherbrained, birdwitted

● Undisciplined, capricious, whimsical, erratic

● Lazy, indolent, remiss, lax, slothful

● Untidy, negligent, careless, slipshod, slovenly, messy, disorderly, unmethodical, unsystematic

● Helpless, weak, unable, powerless, ineffectual, ineffective, incompetent

Def. Impotent. Powerless to act or to accomplish anything; helpless

Def. Impotence. The condition or quality of being impotent; especially: helplessness, ineffectiveness

Syn. Powerlessness, forcelessness, weakness, inability, ineffectualness

Def. Ineffectual. Not effectual; not able to produce a proper or intended effect.

Seriousness in a personality, acting over a period of years, produces an able, capable, knowledgeable person. Lack of seriousness in a personality produces a shallow, impotent, ineffectual person.

I have observed a lot of impotent, ineffectual people over the years. Even many elderly people. How can a person get up into his 80's and still be helpless and incapable of doing anything? Perhaps my observations give insight into the reason why. There are few character traits as important as self-reliance and independence. And underlying these traits is seriousness.
