What sells?
What sells? Some things sell like hot cakes. Other things you can’t even give away — no one wants them. So what sells? Pornography. That sells. That is probably the hottest selling item of all in America. There is a gigantic demand for it. Alcohol sells. It is consumed in huge amounts almost everywhere. Recreational drugs like marijuana, cocaine, meth, etc. sell. Junk food sells (it has a huge market). Books on how to get rich quick sell. Spectator sports like football sell (they get huge audiences). Popular music sells (especially music with erotic love themes). Hollywood movies sell (especially movies featuring a lot of illicit love). Religion often sells, especially if the salesman is a handsome, smooth-talking preacher with a good line and aided by just the right kind of music. So what kind of things don’t sell? Well, one of the best examples that I can think of is the type of articles found on my web site. You can’t even give something like this away. There isn’t a person in ten thousand, perhaps in fifty thousand, who is interested.
We are talking about demand in a society. The things that are in demand in a particular society. The things that aren’t in demand. What does this kind of information tell us about a society? What does it tell us about the attitudes, outlooks, values, and basic assumptions of the people of a society? What does it tell us about the characters of the people?
Truth. If you are interested in Truth don’t think it is going to be easily found. To find it you are going to have to work for it. You are going to have to dig it out with hard toil. The things in life that are easily found are the things that everyone wants, the things for which there is high demand. High demand brings out sellers. For example, there is a lot of demand for pornography and junk food and there are lots of sellers. You don’t find many sellers around for things for which there is little or no demand. Truth is just not a thing most people are interested in and so you just don’t find many venders for it. Most people prefer lie to truth. They will listen to Lie but they won’t listen to Truth. So you have a lot of venders selling various varieties of Lie but not many selling Truth. People don’t generally spend a lot of effort trying to sell something that no one wants to buy.
