What is the secret to a happy life?
What is the secret to a happy life? To answer that question we need to ask: What things lead to unhappiness in life? A great many of the things that lead to unhappiness in life take the form of habits. To a very large extent happiness comes from knowing how to live life. And this largely comes down to having the right habits and not having the wrong habits. Good habits build us up. Bad habits tear us down. There are many habits that inevitably lead into troubles, difficulties and ultimately unhappiness for us. What habits, for example? Pride, arrogance, argumentativeness, confrontation, fighting, jealousy, envy, temper, impatience, carrying anger or hatred, maliciousness, lustfulness, sexual promiscuity, looking at pornography, drunkenness, carousing, drug use, overeating, gluttony, self-indulgence, greed, lying, cheating, stealing, selfishness, squandering, idleness. Some of these, like jealousy, envy, anger, hate, and maliciousness, are like acids that destroy us from within. Others like arrogance, argumentativeness, fighting, and temper lead to imprudent words, actions, or conduct that brings us trouble and ultimately unhappiness.
Do you want to have a happy life? Change your habits. Get rid of bad habits and install good habits. Change the way you think, act, and respond to people. Change the way you live life. Stop arguing with people. Learn patience. Control your temper. Learn self-discipline. Become a teetotaler. Change the way you treat people. Read the Bible and take it seriously. Etc.
There are some causes of unhappiness that are not caused by wrong habits. For example: misfortune such as loss of a spouse, abuse by a superior, etc.
If at a particular time you are feeling low, depressed, or unhappy, is there anything you can do about it? Yes. Become occupied in some project or task (physical or mental) that you like. It will take your mind off the thing that is troubling you.
The teachings of religions tell people how to live life and the teachings of the major religions are surprisingly similar in the things they teach. Compare the teachings of Jesus with those of Confucius and Buddha. You will find that they are surprisingly similar. For example, Jesus emphasized avoiding confrontation and argument. Interestingly, Chinese philosophy places great emphasis on harmony and non-confrontation in human relations.
