A fact of life: It is a messed up world!
One of the big facts of life: It is a messed up world! Things are almost never what they ought to be. They are often very far from what they ought to be. This is a fact that has been impressing itself on me over and over from my high school days. The reason things are so often so far from what they ought to be is usually because people are so often so far from what they ought to be. And because of this, one should never assume too much or feel too secure. One should think ahead, act prudently, and emphasize saving money. A stash of money gives considerable comfort of mind in a very uncertain and sometimes ugly world. Why are things so often so far from what they should be? In my experience this “fact of life” is usually connected with organizations. (Organizations, however, are constructed by people and made up of people. So at bottom, the problem is people and their organizational constructions and assumptions.) When I was in high school I was not at all happy with the system. I felt that that system was not at all right for me. (I liked the system in the small one room country school that I had attended from grade one to eight much better.) I have nothing at all good to say about the college I attended. It was the opposite of everything I think a school should be. After college I worked at three different jobs. My experience with new jobs is that you don’t get the kind of training you should have for a new job. You are expected to just pick up what you need to know by some process or other. It can be frustrating. In addition to that, things on a job are often, for often many reasons, very far from what they should be. During my working days I was always dreaming of leading a self-sufficient life on a homestead out in the country. One of my strong points has always been my ability to save money. So in my working days I put up with what I didn’t like to save money.
