Connection between the personality trait of frugality and personal happiness
Although most people might not realize it, there is a strong connection between the personality trait of frugality and personal happiness. The reason is the role that the habit of frugality plays in achieving financial independence in life. The following quotations contain some very profound thoughts and show the connection that I am talking about.
Frugality may be termed the daughter of prudence, the sister of
temperance, and the parent of liberty. He that is extravagant
will quickly become poor, and poverty will enforce dependence
and invite corruption.
Johnson
With parsimony a little is sufficient; without it nothing is
sufficient; but frugality makes a poor man rich.
Seneca
By sowing frugality we reap liberty, a golden harvest.
Agesilaus
The way to wealth is as plain as the way to market. It depends
chiefly on two words, industry and frugality; that is waste
neither time nor money, but make the best of both. Without
industry and frugality nothing will do; with them, everything.
Franklin
Economy is the parent of integrity, of liberty, and of ease;
and the beauteous sister of temperance, of cheerfulness, and
health; and profuseness is a cruel and crafty demon, that
gradually involves her followers in dependence and debts, and
so fetters them with irons that enter into their inmost souls.
Hawkesworth
The greatest of all human benefits, that, at least, without
which no other benefit can be truly enjoyed, is independence.
Park Godwin
It is not the greatness of a man's means that makes him
independent, so much as the smallness of his wants.
Cobbett
The word independence is united to the ideas of dignity and
virtue; the word dependence, to the ideas of inferiority and
corruption.
J. Bentham
Let all your views in life be directed to a solid, however
moderate, independence; without it no man can be happy, nor
even honest.
