A fool and his money are soon parted
Before I say what I am going to say, let me say that I am an honest person who would always do the right thing, deal with a person honestly, charge him an honest price.
My wife is a hairdresser and has been practicing for around 50 years now and so I have had a window into the world of hairdressing. There are a great many hairdressers, if not most of them, who are out to rip people off, pull money out of them, with every trick they know: really high prices, telling them they need work they don’t need, selling them high priced products they don’t need, etc. And I have long noted that it often seems like it is those with the least conscience in this regard who have the largest followings. And it is the customers who are being ripped off most who are the most loyal. Why would this be? Well, this world is full of fools. Suckers are a dime a dozen. A thought occurred to me this morning: Many people equate high prices with high quality, low prices with low quality. As a consequence they actually want to pay a lot because they think that will give them higher quality and that makes them feel good. So these dishonest hairdressers give them their wish, charge them a big price, and make them happy. One can see this same phenomena in regard to buying clothes. Some people only buy name brand clothes at high prices. The more money they pay for a garment, the more they like the garment and the better they feel. They want to pay high prices. It makes them feel good to know they are wearing something that they paid a really high price for. They equate the amount they paid with quality. It is all about ego. They want to feel they are wearing the best. And they want to be up to date, wearing the latest in fashion. Others, like myself, are always looking for good value at the best price and buy low priced clothes at WalMart and Dollar stores. One can see this same phenomenon in buying food. My wife and I buy all our food at stores like ALDI and Price Less where the food is of very good quality and the prices are far lower than at the mainline supermarkets. But by far the vast majority of people shop at the mainline supermarkets. I am always amazed that so many people will shop at a supermarket that I would never go to because I view it as extremely high priced when there is an ALDI or Price Less right near it. People just don’t care about money. They seem to feel, “Money is meant to be spent” and they just love spending it. I think of the saying, “A fool and his money are soon parted.”
