Doctrine of the elect, the chosen
Many passages in the New Testament refer to the believers as the elect, the chosen of God, the called of God. The Bible teaches that all those who turn to God and become Christians were chosen by God to do so. They were foreordained to become Christians from the beginning of time. They are the elect of God, the called of God. Only those who are chosen of God will become Christians. On the other hand, anyone who repents of his sin and turns to God can become a Christian. The invitation is open to everyone. But it is God who brings one to repentance. God knows and determines who will and who won’t repent of their sins and turn to him.
John 6:44-45 No man can come to me, except the Father which has sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh to me. Words of Jesus
Col 3:12-15 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; {13} bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. {14} But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. {15} And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
I note that none of us can be absolutely sure of our call and election as is suggested in the last verse of the following passage (highlighted):
2 Pet 1:5-10 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. {8} For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. {9} For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. {10} Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble;
