The Spirit of Christ which lives within a true Christian
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 23 If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. Words of Jesus
Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Paraphrase: There is no eternal damnation for the true Christians, those who deny the demands of the flesh, who live not in accordance with the desires and inclinations of their lower nature, but live in accordance with the Spirit of Christ (God’s spirit) dwelling within them.
Rom 8:13-14 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Paraphrase: If you live according to your carnal nature, in accordance with the desires and inclinations of your lower nature (i.e. if you live a sinful life), you will go go to hell. But if you follow God’s spirit within and deny the temptations and inclinations of the flesh, you will go to heaven. Those who are led by God’s spirit are the true children of God.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
1 Pet 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
How do we become born again? Through repentance of sin, rejection of sin, turning to God, obedience to God. To the extent that our outlooks, attitudes, values, and conduct conform to Biblical teaching, we become children of God and God’s spirit dwells within us. We are children born of the Word of God.
The true Christian through self-control, self-discipline, and self-denial resists the impulses and inclinations of his lower nature and lives according to the knowledge of what is right that is within him. The knowledge of what is right within him comes from the spirit of God within him and is closely connected with his knowledge of God’s word. (It corresponds to the outlooks, attitudes and values of the Bible.) Being a Christian is about more than knowledge of what is right. It is about an obedience that requires seriousness, commitment, self-discipline, and character.
