A person’s concept of what Christianity is, what it means to be a Christian, depends on the Christian denomination he is from. If he is Roman Catholic, it means compliance with the practices, rites, beliefs, teachings and dogma of Roman Catholicism. If he is Baptist it may mean little more than the act of “accepting the Lord”, “accepting Jesus as Savior”; or it may mean that plus living a clean, straight, upright life.
A person’s idea of what constitutes right and wrong conduct can vary considerably from one denomination to another. A conservative protestant may view drinking, smoking, dancing, gambling, swearing, card playing, using vulgar language, looking at pornography, etc. as sinful and wrong. Other people who view themselves as Christian may see nothing wrong in any of these things.
My idea of what it means to be a Christian is to turn from sin, turn to God, and obey him by following his teachings as found in scripture (mainly by following the teachings of Jesus). I believe the heart of Christianity is in practice, obedience to God. That means living a straight, honest, clean, morally pure, virtuous life.
