Chains. Habits have consequences.
● Laziness, negligence leads to messing up. Messing up leads to excuse-making, dissembling and lying. The lazy person is probably also a liar. There is a saying, “He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.”
● Lack of prudence, self-indulgence, self-gratification lead to hand to mouth living. Hand to mouth living leads to borrowing and living beyond your income. Borrowing and living beyond your income lead to difficult positions, corners, vulnerability. Difficult positions, corners and vulnerability lead to temptations, moral compromise, greed, money chasing, dishonesty, lying, loss of integrity.
The word independence is united to the ideas of dignity and virtue; the word dependence, to the ideas of inferiority and corruption.
J. Bentham
Let all your views in life be directed to a solid, however moderate, independence; without it no man can be happy, nor even honest.
Junius
It is not the greatness of a man's means that makes him independent, so much as the smallness of his wants.
