Things characteristic of childhood. - Everything is new for us. It is a big world and we are learning about it. It is a time in our lives for discovery and learning. - Occasions like Christmas, Halloween, birthdays, etc. mean a lot to us. They are all new to us. We learn for the first time about Christmas trees, Santa Claus, Jack-o- lanterns, etc. - It is a time for playing, games, activity and imagination. It is a time for high spirits, enthusiasm, exuberance. The young, not only of the human species but also of the animal world, are playful, frisky and exuberant (as seen in the playfulness of young kittens, puppies, bear cubs, etc.). Children love toys, building blocks, tinker-toys and sand boxes. - Children are dependent on their parents for the basic essentials of life (food, shelter, clothing, protection from a hard world). They assume these basic essentials as givens, pay no thought to them, are without care in regard to them. - Childhood thinking is characterized by idealism, impracticality and by considerable ignorance (especially in regard to the realities of life). Things characteristic of adulthood - responsibility, duty, obligation - concern for the practicalities of life, especially the acquisition of the basic necessities of life (i.e. food, shelter, clothing) - self-reliance, independence June 1992 More from SolitaryRoad.com:
