America is sick

In the article Disparate Impact Thinking Is Destroying Our Civilization Heather Mac Donald of the Manhattan Institute states:

Here are the relevant facts. In 2019, 66 percent of all black 12th graders did not possess even partial mastery of basic 12th grade math skills, defined as being able to do arithmetic and to read a graph. Only seven percent of black 12th graders were proficient in 12th grade math, defined as being able to calculate using ratios. The number of black 12th graders who were advanced in math was too small to show up statistically in a national sample. The picture was not much better in reading. Fifty percent of black 12th graders did not possess even partial mastery of basic reading, and only four percent were advanced.

According to the ACT, a standardized college admissions test, only three percent of black high school seniors were college ready in 2023.

Well, I learned how to calculate using ratios in the seventh grade in the little one room country school that I attended. See Basic Principles of Teaching. This really shows what has happened to American education over the years. Today’s high school graduate has not even reached the educational level I had reached by the seventh grade of my little one room country school.

Heather Mac Donald also states:

We need to face up to the truth: the reason for racial underrepresentation across a range of meritocratic fields is the academic skills gap. The reason for racial overrepresentation in the criminal justice system is the crime gap.

I have said many times that America has lost her way, that she is depraved morally, spiritually, and intellectually. That anyone could even suggest that people who cannot even do basic arithmetic or calculate using ratios should be proportionately represented in the medical profession or any other profession shows shocking lack of good sense. And that is what America’s Left is doing. America’s Left, by the kinds of arguments it makes, shows a shocking lack of reason, good sense, and understanding of life and people. And America’s Right by its lack of vigorous response to all of this Liberal foolishness shows great cowardice.

America is sick. What has happened to her?

ON LUXURY

***********

Luxury makes a man so soft that it is hard to please him and

easy to trouble him; so his pleasures at last become his

burden. Luxury is a nice master, hard to be pleased.

                                                  Mackenzie

Fell luxury! More perilous to youth than storms or quicksands,

   poverty or chains.

                                                 H. More

Avarice and luxury, those pests which have ever been the ruin

   of every great state.

                                                 Livy

It was a shrewd saying, whoever said it, "The man who first

bought ruin on the Roman people was he who pampered them by

   largesses and amusements."

                                             Plutarch

Luxury is the first, second and third cause of the ruin of

republics. It is the vampire which soothes us into a fatal

slumber while it sucks the life-blood of our veins.

                                                 Payson

On the soft bed of luxury most kingdoms have expired.

                                              Young

Where necessity ends, curiosity begins; and no sooner are we

supplied with everything that nature can demand then we sit

   down to contrive artificial appetites.

                                                   Johnson

Whenever vanity and gaiety, a love of pomp and dress,

furniture, equipage, buildings, great company, expensive

diversions, and elegant entertainments get the better of the

principles and judgments of men and women there is no knowing

where they will stop, nor into what evils, natural, moral or

   political, they will lead us.

                                            John Adams

War destroys men, but luxury destroys mankind; at once corrupts

   the body and the mind.

                                                   Crown
