The most important knowledge

There are different kinds of knowledge. And all knowledge is not equal. There are some kinds of knowledge that are just infinitely more important than other kinds of knowledge. Knowledge in how to live life is infinitely more important than the kind of knowledge you learn in school or from books (like knowledge of history, geography, science or other similar subjects). And some of the most important kinds of knowledge is knowledge that you can’t really know just through reading or having someone tell it to you. You can only really know it through personal experience. What am I talking about? A person who has for many years been plagued and tormented by an inferiority complex and lack of confidence suddenly one day, by some kind of psychological phenomenon that he doesn’t quite understand, perhaps because he feels he has finally proven himself sufficiently, flips over into a state of self-confidence and remains permanently in that new state. That person really knows and appreciates the value of self-confidence to good mental balance and personal happiness.

A person who has for years held within himself an anger toward society one day, by some feat that he doesn’t really understand, suddenly lets go of all that anger and flips over into a completely new state characterized by a friendly attitude toward society. That flip into the new outlook is permanent, is a new norm, and stays with him the rest of his life. That person really understands how much damage inner anger can do to one and how important the right attitude toward people is to good mental health. It is knowledge that will never leave him.

A person who from youth carries a rather high opinion of his ability, for a number of years carries more pride than is healthy, after some very crushing emotional experience, suddenly becomes an honestly humble person. That person has learned an invaluable lesson that few proud people probably ever learn. That person has learned how very heavy a burden excessive pride is and how honest humility makes life so very much easier. And it is a lesson he will not forget and there is no danger of him ever going back to his old way.

I would say that I could say the same kind of things about hatred, envy, jealousy, lust, and greed.

These things are all ugly traps that ensnare many people and cause great unhappiness. Some people are lucky. Some people are so fortunate as to learn some of the most important lessons of life before they die.

The right habits in life. The habit of avoiding argument and strife. The habit of kindness toward other people. The habit of avoiding criticizing. The habit of maintaining a cheerful spirit around others. The right habits are so very important to personal happiness and good mental balance.

Actually all of these basic truths of life can be found in the Bible. Especially they can be found in the teachings of Jesus.

Look to Christianity, to the teachings that you find in the gospels and epistles of the New Testament.
