On littering

In the last half of the You Tube video

You Tube       I Went To The New Drug Capital Of The United States              Nick Johnson

Nick Johnson shows quite a lot of video of a gigantic litter problem in the desert area near Palm Springs, California. The images are really shocking. There is just an amazing amount of liter in the form of plastic bags and all kinds of other trash all snarled in the branches of the desert vegetation there. There is so much of it that they say cleaning it all up would be a gigantic project. In what traveling I have done in the United States I haven’t seen much litter lying about and I think the USA is mostly quite a clean country. However, in the You Tube videos that I have seen of third world countries I have seen countries where I think littering is a big problem creating real eye sores. Everyone just seems to throw their trash on the ground. Perhaps the problem is a lack of trash receptacles and public education.

I think I can say for a certain fact that I have never in my life thrown a piece of trash on the ground. I feel quite sure also that neither of my parents ever did either and I think it likely that neither my brother nor sister ever did. I am sure that there are many people who can say the same as I. And I am sure it is not because anyone ever told me I shouldn’t. Why is it that some people would just never throw trash on the ground and others do it all the time? What is the mentality that is demonstrated when people just thoughtlessly throw their trash on the ground. Perhaps they check around first to see if there is anyone around to see them and then throw it on the ground. What does this particular conduct say about a person? What does it show about their character, their mentality? Laziness? Indifference, disregard for other people? What is it in some people that prevents them from doing it?
