Ideas
Ideas. Man is very good at coming up with ideas. Especially ideas that sound great and that he would really like to believe. People are gullible and easily persuaded of great sounding ideas. And if they hear many people stating such an idea (or implicitly assuming it) they adopt it and it becomes part of their basic assumptions and mind.
Example of an idea:
● The government has a moral obligation to provide every human being with food, shelter, clothing, all the basic needs of life, and a safe, crime-free environment. It is a basic human right.
This is an idea, belief or assumption that a person might become possessed of. How would a government do this? Well, governments have endless supplies of money and just how to do it is a problem for someone else to figure out. We won’t worry about details.
Other examples of ideas:
● Marxism is a great, wonderful system, much superior to capitalism. Capitalism is bad, evil.
● Extramarital sex is fine. There is nothing wrong with it.
● Homosexual sex is fine. There is nothing wrong with it.
● Lying is fine. It won’t hurt anyone.
● Christianity is outdated and invalid. We are in a new intellectually advanced, progressive age.
● Pornography is fine. There is nothing wrong with it.
● There is no god and no hereafter. Those ideas are outdated.
● A person who does not accept homosexual sex as being OK is a bad person. He should be ostracized. We live in a new, advanced age that knows homosexuality is fine and is sensitive to the feelings and rights of the homosexuals.
● The idea of there being just two sexes, male and female, is false. The idea is outdated. It is now known that there are several different sexual orientations.
● The white man is bad. He is guilty of all kinds of crimes such as owing slaves. (Of course he may not have owned slaves himself but he has a collective guilt because some white men of the past owned them or traded in them.)
● The nasty, bad white man is guilty of unfairly discriminating against Blacks in America. The Blacks are an abused race in America.
A whole lot of people of the masses of mankind, especially those who have done poorly in school and are not accustomed to exerting themselves much mentally, can be possessed by very simplistic ideas. A great many of these ideas lie in the realms of personal philosophy, religion, and politics. Many cannot be proved right or wrong in a logical way but rest on religious belief for their truth or falseness (as one cannot, for example, prove logically that murder or theft is either right or wrong). If much of humanity has a particular idea (such as the idea that illicit sex is fine) that people like and find appealing they will just pick it up and make it their own. They just follow the crowd. If the mass media (newspapers, TV, etc.) all assume some idea most people will just pick it up and assume it to be true. Most people are not critical thinkers. They are not really thinkers at all.
