The fundamental importance of trust

Trust. Trust between individuals. It is of fundamental importance in human relationships. In all ages, in all cultures, trust is fundamental in many things: in business transactions, in personal relationships. Before I do any business with anyone the first concern for me is whether they can be trusted. Are they honest? Do I trust them? I don’t want to do business with anyone unless I feel I can trust them. If someone does something that is dishonest I will quickly see it and won’t forget it. I probably won’t say anything but you can be sure I will note it and remember it. If I am dealing with a new business and see anything that causes me to distrust them, I won’t deal with them again. If I don’t trust a person I will be very careful with him, keep him at a distance. And this is why honesty in a person is so important in this world. If you are a dishonest person other people will detect it and life will become much harder for you. If you own a business one of your most important assets is a reputation for honesty and fair dealing. In a marriage, trust is of fundamental importance. It is of critical importance that your spouse trusts you. And if you wish to be trusted, you can’t fake it. You have to be an honest person worthy of trust. We live in a society where real honesty is quite rare. Is it any wonder why so many marriages are unhappy?

Trust that is lost is not easily regained. Loss of trust is not a thing that is easily repaired or fixed. Thus it behooves a person to be very careful in his conduct.

reputation, but one is willing to pay a thousand kilos of gold

   for his credibility.

The reputation of a thousand years may be determined by the

   conduct of one hour.

Glass, china and reputation. Things never well repaired once

   cracked.
